Home is Where the Hearth is: Contemporary Style Décor Loading

Contemporary style of decor immediately brings up images of clean and easy, well defined lines and a casual look with all the modern comforts.

Contemporary means ‘belonging to or occurring in the present’. You will notice that we are referring to it as contemporary and not modern. Modern is more restrictive and relates to a period of style which is rigid whereas contemporary is more flexible.

Now if I had contemporary decor in my home I would love to put this up on my wall! Reference – Etsy.com

Have you watched the TV series by legendary Nigella Lawson? I have, and each time I watch her show, I am of course drawn by the way she makes love to the food (well almost!) and when I take my eyes off that, I am watching her exquisite kitchen, with all the lovely gadgets, her huge refrigerator, the mixer, etc. and of course the pretty view. It is exactly how I would want my kitchen to be. Watch the show and make your dream contemporary style kitchen – or better still, read on!

A few pointers on contemporary style of décor

Living room

Doormat

Walls — it may be a good idea to use neutral colors like beige, white or cream for the walls so that you can play around with the colors for furnishings and accessories. If you really would like to have a bright color say Mediterranean blue— use it and build a theme around it.

Doors—Neutral / White with simple, yet modern door knobs, peep hole, handle, floor mat, etc.

Curtains — If your walls are white, and one focus wall is yellow, try jute colored or beige blinds with white curtains.

cushions
Cushions — if you have white sofas use multi-colored cushions – some plain and some with a square or diamond kind of design. The cushions immediately soften the living room and take away the rigidity.

contemporary dining table

Dining room — A nice glass topped table would complete the look. Alternatively you can use rubber wood or beach wood furniture with a nice runner.

Bedroom — I would paint one of the walls green or blue for effect. My curtains would be a mix of green or blue sheer or a combination of both to go with the wall. You could have a mirror lining up a small wall to make the room bigger and position your dressing table accordingly.

Kitchen You will always achieve a compact, clean and neat look with contemporary décor. Colored cabinets, white walls, a nice back splash of granite or any other material off the counters, a modern electric chimney, and the latest gadgets and accessories are some of the essentials of a modern kitchen.

Bathroom – A number of accessories can be used to make the bathroom look pristine and modern!

Floor decor — can you imagine a Kashmiri carpet in this setting? Actually I can – and prefer not to! So choose your rug carefully — it should go well with the sofa, walls and any focus colors you may have. A nice combination of colors could be  white walls, a blue focus wall and a grey and blue rug. Or a jute rug as below.

Accessories — there are umpteen things that I could think of here. The best thing about having a neutral or white wall color is that you can choose bright artefacts that make a statement. A lovely family photo frame which is white or black, white and red or pink flowers set in a huge contemporary glass vase, a modern clock, modern art which is colorful, bright and cheery, a terrarium with succulents are some of the artefacts which come to my mind.
