Sounds of Silence: The Arundhati Collections (7)

Sounds of silence Loading

Hush!…Be still..Be quiet,

Let the noise fade into the night

Now close your eyes and lend me your ears

And try to listen, not just to hear.

Before the start of creation, before the dawn of time,

Before the songs and ballads and many a song rhyme

Before the first musician hummed his verse,

It was silence that stretched across the universe

At times I wish for a spell so I’d be able,

To freeze this moment and stop all the people

Wipe the world clean of noise and mindless chatter,

And to bid the quiet to reign for ever after.

There are sounds around us that we cannot hear,

And I wonder if these things that escape our ears

Are a part of the silence that we seem to know

Maybe it is here, but it doesn’t show

Maybe the stars sing in voices we know not,

Maybe the trees speak a language we’ve never been taught,

Maybe the raindrops scream as they fall

Maybe the mind is talking to us all.

And maybe the planets hum during their celestial dance,

Maybe the rainbows would speak if given a chance,

maybe each grain of sand has a story to tell

Maybe the silence isn’t silence, but a sound as well.

Shh! Hold on, don’t hurry about

Don’t rush, don’t move, don’t scream, and don’t shout.

For just a second, shut out every other symphony,

And you’ll hear that silence has its own melody.

Take time out to hear your own breath,

To hear your heart beat in your chest,

Do you realize how loud silence is?

Or appreciate what it promises?

It is the before and after of every song,

It’s where the whispers and secrets belong,

It’s the end of every night, the start of every morn,

It is out of silence that every sound is born.

I am deaf, these ears cannot hear

But for me, the quiet holds no fear

For even in the vacuum there is noise profound

It is true that silence has its own sound.

The Arundhati Foundation is a private, non-profit foundation started by Dr Shubhangi Sanjay Tambwekar and Mr Sanjay Achyut Tambwekar in the memory of their daughter Dr. Arundhati Sanjay Tambwekar who passed away in a gruesome road-traffic accident in Vellore on the morning of the 9th September 2014. Arundhati was on the way to CMC Vellore where she was Post Graduate Registrar pursuing her Diploma in Clinical Pathology. She was riding pillion wearing a helmet. Vellore roads are extremely bad and possibly this is the main factor which took away the life of a brilliant, talented, hard-working girl and a gem of a human being.
