Love by Chance

Editors note: This story is a real life story and hence was published. However, we would like to caution readers that in today’s world, where we hear more news of mishaps and disasters, these kind of incidents should be approached with dollops of caution!

As I recall, it was the summer of 2003. We – my best friend and I – were sitting along the poolside of our neighborhood club, munching on cheese balls and looking at the cute guys using the pool. Suddenly, her phone rang and triggered a chain of absolutely unexpected events. Here’s how the rest of the conversation went:

She: “It’s an unknown number, I am not answering.”

Me: “It might be from our tuition center, why don’t you take the call?”

I snatched the phone from her and answered it.

Me: “Hello, who’s this?”

I heard a wonderful voice from the other side of the phone. He said, “Can I talk to Nitin Gupta?”

I said, “Hold on” and gave the phone to my friend. She thought it’s from somebody known and continued. In a few seconds, the wrong number call got over, leaving a smile on her face. We looked at each other, passed mischievous smiles and ate the remaining cheese balls. Within the next fifteen minutes, the phone rang again.

Guess what? It was the same wrong number! She answered the call and said, “There is no Nitin on this number, why are you calling again?”

She waited for few seconds and disconnected the call. Looking at me, she said, “My heartbeat has become so fast and I have butterflies in my stomach! He said he called again just to listen to my voice and he also said would love to call again.”

I also got so excited but warned her to be cautious as he was a complete stranger to us.

Two days passed in anticipation, and she finally got the call she had been secretly waiting for. She told me that the conversation went for almost two hours and they talked about their names, families, sun signs, likes and dislikes. She told me that they both shared the same birth date too. I somehow felt there was a little more to this than pure coincidence – may be a story filled with love, the beginnings of a romantic story, may be a story of wrong number becoming the number of Mr. Right.

The calls continued for almost a month and they had started to miss each other already. They planned to meet at a nearby market. Of course, I was to tag along. We both reached the market ten minutes before the decided time. We waited for half an hour and thought maybe it was just a prank and left disappointed. My friend had tears in her eyes and just then, her phone rang. It was him. He apologised and said that he had few unexpected guests at his place so he couldn’t come. She thought it to be just an excuse and became really disheartened. She did not respond to his calls for the next two days. On the third day, when our Economics tuition class concluded, we were collecting our assignments. She checked her phone and it had a message saying “I am waiting for you at the same market”. In our flurry of excitement, we even forgot to pay our tuition fees. Quickly sprinting down the stairs, we took a rickshaw and asked the driver to drive as fast as possible. And we reached, phew!!

She was trembling with nervousness. I held her hand and told her to relax.  The phone rang, and as soon as she said hello, she turned back. There he was, Mr Wrong Number, standing tall and handsome. Though, they already had developed feelings for each other, but somehow it turned out to be Love at First Sight. After dating for almost seven and a half years, they exchanged vows. Wow!!

And this I would call, Love by Chance!!
