How Does Your Garden Grow? Series: Herb Gardens Loading

Hello all!

A nice quote I found on the internet – and how true! Stay happy and positive and that is the remedy to all your problems.

What is a herb? According to Wikipidea, a herb is any plant with leaves, seeds, or flowers used for flavouring, food, medicine, or perfume. For those who are familiar with Simon & Garfunkel of ‘Scarborough Fair’ fame, the common herbs that immediately come to mind are Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. And of course the very comforting pizza and pasta along with it!

If you have just started gardening but would love to own some herbs, I would suggest you do some container gardening. Use available pots or tin containers, make sure that they have a hole or two to drain the water out and fill the same with a mix of soil, manure and coco peat or a ready-made mix that is available in most of the nursery shops. Plant the herbs or seeds and water it on a regular basis. Most herbs need 4-6 hours of sunlight. Water the plant only if the soil is getting dry.

Start with mint, coriander and fenugreek – they are the easiest to grow.

So how do we go about it? Let us try a small Do It Yourself project with coriander.

  • Take a container (large size) or window planter/pot or an old plastic tub. Place it in an area where there is sunlight for a period of 4-6 hours at least. Maybe the kitchen window sill?
  • Make sure the containers have 2 -3 small holes to drain the water out
  • Best time to plant coriander is a time when it is not too frosty or too hot
  • Put the ready to mix soil in your container and rake well. Take lightly crushed coriander seeds and sprinkle on the soil. Cover with another layer of soil.
  • Water them frequently and they will germinate in about 7 days
  • Once the stems reach 4 to 6 inches in length, it is ready to be harvested. Cut up to 2/3 of the leaves each week as this will keep the plant growing.
  • Kind of plants for your herb garden – Mint, fenugreek, parsley, sage, rosemary, thyme, basil, Tulsi (holy basil) are the more popular names of herbs. Create your very own herb garden by planting all the herbs mentioned.
  • Factors that go in to keep a herb garden healthy – As usual, water, sunlight and fertilizer!

So go ahead – buy some seeds and start right away!

  • How to beautify the garden – Your herb garden can get as pretty as you want it to be. For instance, mint comes in various colors – if you combine it with lavender and rosemary, you can have a colorful herb garden!

Garden maintenance – Herbs, like any other plant need to be watered when you plant them. They  don’t last like regular plants do, so enjoy them while they are there! With 4-6 hours of good sunlight, water and a well-drained soil, your herbs should flourish well. They do not need much fertilizer and in that sense are quite maintenance free. Prune the tips of herbs regularly for better growth.
